Speech Language Therapy is a highly specialized therapy for children or adults who have difficulty:

Saying sounds for speaking ("won" for "run", "do" for "go")

Difficulty comprehending spoken language such as following directions, memory for sequencing steps, stories

Expressing themselves in their speaking and writing (thoughts are not connected, writing does not flow)

Difficulty learning to read or have been diagnosed with developmental dyslexia

Stammering or stuttering (parents usually describe the child as being, "tongue-tied")

Voice (hoarse vocal quality, characterized by a deep, raspy voice)
As a patient or parent, what does this mean to you? Speech and Language disorders impact social as well as academic performance in reading comprehension, written language, spelling, word decoding for reading, following and understanding written as well as spoken directions.
Typical academic behaviors of language and articulation disordered children include:

Reading Comprehension: They have to reread material several times and often remember only a few details, rather than the "whole".

Oral Language Comprehension: They connect to only part of a conversation and have difficulty responding relevantly and thinking logically. They may ask and re-ask the same questions and are often labeled "poor listeners".

Oral Language Expression: They may seem shy and have difficulty organizing their language... or they may be talkative but scattered, relating information out of sequence or off the topic.

Written Language Skills: Their writing is often described as unorganized and nonspecific; loaded with details but no point.
Programs are developed to meet the specific needs of our clients. Our programs are designed for individual therapy.
A typical language program will stimulate concept imagery to image the "big picture" and improve language comprehension, reasoning for critical thinking and expressive language skills. The program will stimulate phonemic awareness. Individuals become aware of mouth actions that produce speech sounds so they can feel sounds within words, enabling them to become self-correcting in reading, spelling and speech.
